I got this for Christmas from my fiance - I've wanted it for a while, so this time I took it to him in a store and said, "THIS IS WHAT I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS." And then I fed him coupons to that store for the next two weeks. :D
I have wanted to get some of Jenny Hart's patterns, but this kit provides a good sampling of them. Although these patterns appear to be exclusive to the kit, they cover many different themes - her other patterns are sold by theme, so you'd have to get a bunch of them to cover as many visual topics as are covered here. I haven't embroidered since high school, so I don't really have the supplies around anymore, for the most part. She sells a similar kit on her website, not as glossy, but you can choose a single packet of patterns to go with it, and it's the same price. If there's a particular packet that you like above all others, especially one that came out after this kit did (like the Unicorn or Gothic pattern sets), it might be a better option.
However, there are very few patterns in here I don't like - the only thing that really comes to mind is the set of electric guitars. I also wish that it had come with the days of the week instead of, or in addition to, the basic alphabet that came with it. It did come with some basic alt-culture tropes: cherries, a tiki god, a hula dancer, palm trees, retro-looking cosmetics, a cat, a dog, the Eiffel Tower, tattoo flash, a cake, a teapot and teacup, atomic-style starburst twinkles, flower vines, jeweled swags, etc. Also the words "yours" and "mine" and a bunch of banner outlines of varying sizes.
It comes with two tea towels, an embroidery hoop, a needle, and seven colours of thread. All you really need to add to it is an ironing setup and a pair of scissors.
Because it only comes with two towels, but 35 designs, my biggest problem has been an attempt to decide which design I should embroider first... not that tea towels are very expensive or difficult to get.
